WHO IS
WALTER H WESTMAN?

Walt is the organizer and past president of this Chapter. He served in the 1st Cavalry in World War II in the South Pacific and has been a member of the association since 1944. He actually worked with horses as a part of his basic training. He was born in 1910. Walt celebrated his 100th birthday on February 4, 2010. Walt, with the help of his son Charlie pictured above, formed the Chapter in 2002.

The Walter H. Westman-Northland Chapter is more than a statewide organization. We have members from WI, IA, SD and ND. In an attempt to accommodate everyone, two meetings each year are held at various out state locations, one north and one south, and two in the Twin cities. Meetings are usually on Saturday and include a social hour, lunch, a speaker and/or an activity such as a tour or celebration.

The Chapter publishes a newsletter called "The Horse Soldier". It is published four times a year and is sent to all active Chapter members. It contains information of interest, anecdotes, schedules of upcoming events and meeting minutes. Click on the link at the bottom of this page to view the current newsletter.

In 2005 the chapter adopted a fund raising program in conjunction with the Minnesota Military Family Assistance Center. This program provides assistance to families of Minnesota National Guard and Reserve servicemen and women who are deployed away from home in Iraq and other parts of the world by supplying grocery gift cards to the Family Assistance Centers statewide.

Since we are a fairly new organization, our activities have been limited to group appearances on Memorial Day and other special veterans events. We are always looking for other programs and activities to participate in that would benefit the veterans of this area.

Each year the 1st Cavalry Division Association has a reunion in June which many members from around the country attend. The 2010 reunion was held here in Bloomington, MN! We were honored to be the hosts of this event...check out the pictures on the Reunion Photo Page!
